Amy began riding at the age of twelve at a hunt seat barn in Lugoff, South Carolina. She rode there for two years before her parents gave her first horse to her, and then spent the next few years trail riding and dabbling in western riding, mostly gymkhana events. She also rode shortly with Cort and Vicky Marzullo of the Camden Hunter Barn just after high school, where she also gained experience with sale horses and racehorses.
She transferred to the University of
Findlay in Ohio for her sophomore year of college and gained a solid foundation
in the basics of riding western performance horses from the school's trainers.
That is also where she began learning about horse care and stable management
in depth. She then spent a short amount of time at St. Andrews Presbyterian
College, where she began polishing her hunt seat riding.
After transferring back to the University of South Carolina to finish
her B.A. in English, Amy joined the staff at Evergreen Farm as a stablehand
and became exposed to top-level dressage riding with trainer Jill Allard.
She stills takes lessons with Jill and hopes to compete her Thoroughbred
gelding Donovan at Training level at local shows. Taking classes at
USC also enabled her to work with Janet Brown in hunt seat and dressage;
more importantly, working with Janet gave her some great insight into
teaching beginners. She hopes to emulate the program Janet created
with USC at Coker College.
Amy will be responsible for teaching beginners and some intermediate
riders in hunt seat and dressage, and hopes to bring some western riders
into the program. She believes in developing the basics, especially that
of a strong, supple position, no matter the discipline. She accomplishes
this through flatwork exercises and work on the lunge line. More importantly,
she wants to instill in her riders true horsemanship by teaching them
proper horse care, kind treatment of the horse, and the balance of correct
training with showing.
